Week of Dec. 4-7

 Important Dates:

Tonight - Choir Performs at 5:00

Friday 8th - No School - PD Day

Our Week:

In math this week we had the grade 4 students working with Mrs. Paterson.  They looked more closely at decimals and place value with tenths and hundreds and are beginning addition and subtraction with decimals and regrouping.  Moving forward they are exploring estimation.  The grade 3 students are working with Mrs. Cox on ensuring they all have a strong understanding of 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction using multiple strategies.  This includes using the algorithm of carrying a ten into the tens column or carrying a hundred into the hundreds column.  As well as regrouping with subtraction where students take a ten from the tens column over to the onces and same with the hundreds moving in to the tens.  This can be a difficult concept so we are ensuring we move slowly and ensure every child is successful in understanding and applying this concept.  We are also beginning some work on geometry.  We have started our conversation and exploration of shapes.  What is a shape?  What is not a shape?  What is a polygon?  What is not a polygon?

Science

This week we did some review work on matter and the water cycle.  Students completed a check in and today they worked on a visual journal page to show their understanding of changing states.

Social Studies

This week the students continued their research on the Alberta geographic region of their choice.  They are using links we provided to learn about topics such as climate, land forms, vegetation, etc.

Active Reading Strategies

We have been going through some ways students can build their comprehension in reading through Active Reading Strategies.  Students each chose a good fit book on Raz Kids to focus on for this project.  Ask you learner to share their book with you!

Literacy

We continued to work on our "Most Terrible Experience" writing, which has been awful to read!  Ha ha.  Students wrote about a terrible memory such as getting a needle, going to the dentist, a time they were nervous about a performance, etc.  They are using the editing checklist we made together and typing their stories out on Google Docs.  This will be continued next week.  We have also started some spelling practice.  Students are working through a variety of activities geared to their individual spelling needs.

PE

We are moving on to target skills this month with various balls and equipment.
