Happy Friday!

Here's a look at our week:

Inquiry:

We began looking at some important people who helped shape Alberta.  We started to inquire into fur traders, explorers, voyageurs, and treaties.  We looked at Chief Crowfoot who signed Treaty 7.  We have also started to explore the anatomy of plants by studying the crocus.  We were very fortunate to hear the "Crocus Story" told by Lesley Tait.  The students have practiced retelling the crocus story with a partner.  See if your child is ready to share the story with you!  This week we were wrapping up our learning about fossils and palaeontology by recording a short newscast about a dinosaur discovery.  Please ask your learner to show you their video as it becomes available on their Google Drive.

Math:

We are so impressed with how well the students are doing with understanding the concepts involved with fractions.  Students are using their knowledge of denominators and numerators to place fractions on a number line, using fraction strips to compare fractions, use the greater than, less than symbols to express fractions, and finding real world examples of fractions.  We also looked at some temperature data from April.  We then plotted that data on a graph and connected the dots to create a line graph.  The students are really improving their ability to communicate what information we can gain from using a graph.

PE:

We have practiced our volleyball skills (setting, bumping and serving) and had fun playing some small court games this week.

Literacy:

Students are finishing off their second persuasive writing piece which was to write a letter to a parent, teacher, peer, etc about something they would like to change in their lives.  We apologize to all those families for the number of letters that were trying to persuade parents to get a new pet!  We also had quite a few letters requesting class pets:).  In reading, we have begun to focus on non-fiction text.  We started to use a booklet and exploration to discover all the different text features we see in non-fiction text such as headings, captions, table of contents...etc.
