Our Week:
Inquiry
This week we began to look into ecosystems and food chains within certain ecosystems. We discussed the Energy Pyramid (producers, consumers, and decomposers). Ask why it's called an Energy Pyramid. We are excited to explore the food webs that exist in our ecosystem when we study the coulee plants and animals.
It's been so nice to have the sun poking through the clouds this week so we can try out our solar cars. The students had to follow some difficult step by step instructions to create their solar cars with a partner. It takes quite a bit of resiliency and perseverance, which we recalled that some of the Mars rovers were named! No wonder why! Today we timed the cars to see how many meters/second they can travel. The winner so far is 15 meters in 19 seconds.
Math
We have been continuing to learn about fractions through word problems and number lines to compare and find equivalent fractions. Grade 3 students are also working on memorizing their math facts. They are practicing for the first 10 minutes of every math class to help make this automatic. Over the long weekend, see if you can improve your time on your facts.
Literacy
The students have been working on assessing their own persuasive writing, which they will be bringing home for you to also provide some feedback for. Today we also continued our non-fiction reading. With our groups, we studied a few different non-fiction books and wrote about the "topic" and the "main idea". This can be pretty tricky to find in some books.
This week we also worked on some instructional writing. Students created a lego structure that represents them in some way. They then took their structure apart and then wrote down step by step instructions for a friend to follow to see if they could put their structure together properly. They did a great job with this.
PE
This month we are working on field games and the skills of passing, throwing, and working as a team. We started with some lacrosse and will go into frisbee and flag football.
